Types of Communities

We can help you determine which type of senior living community might be most appropriate for your loved one: Assisted Living, Memory Care, or Independent Living.

Below is a brief overview of each type of community.  We can discuss each type of community in much greater detail during your loved one’s Daily Life Assessment.

Assisted Living

Assisted Living allows seniors to live as independently as possible while ensuring they receive support if needed with daily activities like bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, taking medication, and moving from one place to another.

Staff help seniors with these daily activities, plus check on them regularly to ensure they're safe and well, transport them to medical appointments, prepare meals for them, and do their housekeeping and laundry.

Seniors maintain significant independence - they can live in their own apartment in the community and choose how they want to spend each part of their day from various social and recreational activities that are offered.

Cost:  $3,000-$12,000 per month

Memory Care

Memory Care is for seniors who have Alzheimer’s or other forms of substantial dementia.

These communities provide everything that Assisted Living communities do and more. For example, Memory Care communities have many additional safety features, staff who are specially trained to care for seniors with dementia, and customize everything from the design of the buildings to the social and therapeutic activities to maximize the well-being of seniors with dementia.

Cost:  $3,500-$10,000 per month

Independent

Living

Independent Living (or retirement communities) is for seniors who are generally self-sufficient and in good health and who simply prefer the benefits of living in a retirement community.  These benefits include freedom from daily chores and home maintenance, and the enjoyment and social stimulation that comes from living in a vibrant community with many other seniors and activities to choose from.

Seniors and their families can schedule care providers to visit them daily, though help is not always available on short notice the way it is in Assisted Living.

Independent Living communities offer more amenities and a wider range of activities compared to Assisted Living, as well as the opportunity for seniors in peak health to socialize with one another.

Cost: $2,000-$7,000 per month
